JONATHAN, BRIDGEPORT,CT
Gender Projected
How old are you, and where are you from?
22. Bridgeport, CT.
How would you identify your gender?
Male.
What presentation would you be afraid to wear on the street where you live now (if any?) Why?High heels with a a bra. I wouldn’t wear it to avoid drama.
What outfit would you be afraid to wear on the street in your hometown or around your family? (if any?) Why?
I wouldn’t feel comfortable wearing the feminine stuff. [My family] would be open to it, but I couldn’t see myself wearing it.
How does your gender identity connect to your sexuality?
I was a lot more femme when I was younger. I came out when I was 15, and I had the idea from TV and other people that gay means you have to be out there. Then I realized that I didn’t have to, and I transitioned back to more male.
How do you generally present?
Masculine.
Did you gain any perspective on gender identity/expression in yourself during the project?
I’m more open than I thought. I haven’t [dressed femininely] that in years. And it’s difficult for people who do that on a daily basis.
In your life, was there another time you explored/experimented with gender identity/expression? If so, what type of experience was it?
It was exciting when I first came out and started [dressing femme], but then I realized I didn’t have to dress like that.
